Suwannee Hulaween cancels 2020 edition, hints at virtual replacementSuwannee Hulaween 1

Another day, another American festival cancellation at the merciless hands of COVID-19. Pour one out this weekend for Florida’s beloved Suwannee Hulaween festival, which will not return in 2020 due to health concerns related to the respiratory virus.

Suwannee Hulaween was scheduled to take place at The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park from October 29 – November 1. On July 21, organizers announced the festival’s cancellation in a statement, writing,

“It has become clear that despite our consistent efforts in tandem with The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park to create and maintain a safe onsite environment, the state of Florida is visibly not ready to host the Hulaween we all know and love… Unfortunately, given the information available, we are not comfortable moving forward with the event in 2020.”

Coordinators additionally hinted at a live-streamed alternative. Read the full statement below.

Dancefestopia postpones festival to 2021, shares new dates

Dancefestopia postpones festival to 2021, shares new datesDancefestopia

No surprise, Kansas City’s premier electronic music festival, Dancefestopia, has canceled its 2020 edition and announced 2021 dates. The festival will take place from September 9 – 12, 2021.

Dancefestopia held out longer than most other festivals with respect to canceling the 2020 event. Organizers notably came under fire from a number of artists on the lineup, including G Jones, Bleep Bloop, and Apashe, who withdrew from the festival due to concerns with rising cases of COVID-19.

Zeds Dead and REZZ will headline the 2021 event, according to the bass-heavy promoter. The 2021 bill is almost identical to 2020’s, with the exception of Adventure Club, 1788-L, and Moody Good, who constitute new additions. The 2021 Friday headliner’s name has also yet to be revealed. Of note, Midnight Tyrannosaurus is the only act to not return in 2021.

Read the Dancefestopia official statement for more information on their ticket policy and the 2021 lineup.

Whethan flexes alternative chops with K.Flay on ‘Hurting On Purpose’

Whethan flexes alternative chops with K.Flay on ‘Hurting On Purpose’Whethan

Few producers today have the courage or the skill to combine pop-rock with alternative trap and actually make it work. Whethan is one of them, and with the help of the equally ambitious vocalist, K.Flay, he has been able to adeptly do just that on his new single, “Hurting On Purpose.”

Over the past few months, Whethan has explored his musical inclinations under the shroud of a space suit burnt and bruised from extended use undoubtedly a metaphor for his trek into various sonic nebulasin the time leading up to his forthcoming debut LP, Fantasy. With the help of indie and rock acts like STRFKR and Grouplove, Whethan has lent real instrumental and organic authenticity to his music while maintaining the electronic foundation on which his career was built.

Whethan has followed this same formula on “Hurting On Purpose,” where K.Flay channels authenticity with her pithy, stripped-back vocal style. Beginning with an indie interlude that is equal parts Phoenix and The Strokes, K.Flay sets the stage, diving right into the stark message behind the lyrics before Whethan succinctly filters out the instrumental influence and replaces it with a buzzing 808 drop.

SSL Brings Serge Dual Slope Generator To MU Format

Synthetic Sound Labs (SSL) has introduced a new module for MU modular systems, the 1240 Dual Slope Generator (DSG).

SSL says that they designed the 1240 Dual Slope Generator in close collaboration with composer and synth designer Serge Tcherepnin, who created the original Dual Slope Generator design in the mid 70’s.

The Dual Slope Generator can be used in many ways. Each Slope Generator can be used as an envelope generator, an LFO, an envelope follower, subharmonic generator and more.

A Serge Slope Generator is a slew limited unity gain voltage follower, whose positive and negative slew rates are voltage controllable. It has an extremely wide range, covering sub-sonic to high audio rates.

Trigger inputs and pulse / gate outputs extend the slewing functions for use as a voltage controlled (VC) LFO, envelope generator and a variable pulse delay mono-stable functions.

One VC responds roughly exponentially, and two additional VC inputs are routed to individual Rise and Fall slope attenuverters, for maximum flexibility and convenience.

This updated design of the 1240 DSG now includes temperature compensation to help eliminate drifting. The linearity and accuracy of the slews allow them to be used for exacting applications, such as portamento functions.

The 1240 has two identical slope generators (A & B) – each of which can be set to self-trigger (Loop), or even to trigger each other for some wild modulation and audio effects. It also has two auxiliary outputs which provide an output that is the greater of A & B (PEAK), and another that is the lesser of A & B (TROUGH). These are interesting and go far beyond normal summing / mixing.

Here are some of the uses for the 1240 DSG:

  • VC Transient / Envelope Generator – simply started by trigger or gate at TRIG IN.
  • VC LFO – The rates are controlled by the Rise and Fall Rate knobs and inputs, and the slopes controlled from LOG thru Linear to Exponential.
  • VC Timing Pulse / Gate generator.
  • VC Portamento with separate controls for rise and fall rates, and slopes.
  • Envelope Follower (Detector) – The VC decay rate allows the response to be moved from positive to negative peak detection.
  • VC Pulse Delay (Monostable).
  • Sub-Harmonic Series Generator. A trapezoidal wave-shape is generated for sonorous, smooth sounds.
  • Audio Generator with variable symmetry and a range into kilohertz regions.
  • Non-Linear Low-Pass Filter. The VC slew limiting can progressively turn a sawtooth wave into a triangle and many variations between. Thus a slope generator can be used as a very interesting low-fidelity VCF.

Pricing and Availability:

The 1240 Dual Slope Generator is available now from SSL and Noisebug for $495 USD.

[embedded content]

Synthesist Marc Doty (AutomaticGainsay) shared this series of in-depth videos that explore the capabilities of the new Buchla Easel Command.

The Buchla Easel Command is an updated version of the 208 Stored Program Sound Source, the synthesizer at the heart of Buchla’s 1973 Music Easel. In the original design, it was paired with the 218 Touch Keyboard Controller to make a complete instrument.

The updated version, the 208C, is available in a standalone desktop form, with MIDI and CV control, as the Easel Command. It’s also available as a module for use in a Buchla 200e system.

The new version offers a variety of updates that are designed to improve usability, add new synthesis options and make it easier to integrate with modern synth rigs. Updates include MIDI input via USB & DIN, 1/4″ audio outputs, minijack cv/gate inputs, USB Host support, new patching options and more.

Details on the Easel Command & 208C module are available at the Buchla site.

New Max For Live Tool, Ratcheteer, Lets You Easily Generate Trap Rhythms & More

[embedded content]

midierror has introduced Ratcheteer, a MIDI note pattern generator for Ableton Live + Max For Live.

Ratcheteer is designed to generate complex MIDI note patterns, based on your MIDI control input and in sync with Ableton Live’s transport.

Here’s what they have to say about it:

“Assign a MIDI Note to ratchet and choose from 5 types of time division to hear the note re-triggered from a steady pace to rapid fire mayhem. Select an output velocity with fixed, random between a range or LFO controls.

Turn the knob or play your keyboard to play the ratcheteer at different speeds. It’ll output expressive MIDI notes which can be recorded as clips and stored in your track.

The Ratcheteer is ideal for Trap Hi Hat petterns, but can be used on any drum or synth hit. It can also be used on multiple channels for entire rhythm track making.

Time divisions include triplets, whole notes, dotted notes, all combined and free (unclocked).”

Note: Ableton Live 10 Suite is required to run this device.

Pricing and Availability

Ratcheteer is available now for 17.50 Euro.
