Erica Synth Black Quad VCA2 Now Available

Erica Synths has released the Black Quad VCA2, an update they say brings “added functionality and performance to this useful and versatile Eurorack module”.

The Black Quad VCA2 is a four-channel voltage-controlled amplifier and mixer module for use in complex modular systems.

Each channel has a linear/logarithmic response selector and signal level indicator LED. Also, all outputs are sequentially mixed and CV inputs are normalled to each other, making the module useful in various configurations.

If no CV is applied, the Black Quad VCA2 performs as a signal mixer, and the fourth channel is DC coupled for controlling CV sources as well.

Features:

  • Four independent VCAs
  • Selectable lin/log response for each channel
  • Manual CV bias and signal level adjustment
  • Sequential output mixing
  • Signal level indicator LEDs

Pricing and Availability

The Erica Synths Black Quad VCA2 is available now and priced at €200. For more information or to order, please visit the Erica Synths product page.

Erica Synths Das Kleine Fusion Vacuum Tube Synthesizer

Erica Synths has introduced Das Kleine Fusion, the ‘younger sibling’ of their Fusion System II vacuum tube based Eurorack modular synthesizer.

They say that Das Kleine Fusion is intended for use with an external FX units, so they omitted the Fusion Delay module and made the system more compact and affordable.

Das Kleine Fusion includes:

  • Two Fusion VCO2s – fully analog sound source, with three simultaneously available waveforms, transistor-based suboscillator and detune function – two BBD delay lines that make frequency shifter that is mixed back to the principal oscillator in order to emulate two detuned VCOs. Tube crunch – distinct tube overdrive – is added on the top of the mix.
  • Fusion VCF3 – resonant 24dB/oct lowpass filter of unique design that combines vacuum tubes and vactrols, providing distinct, soft filtering. For more versatility a CV recorder, that records motion of the potentiometer, is incorporated in the module, so you can design advanced modulation patterns.
  • Fusion Modulator – complex, all analogue CV source that consists of  several blocks – two EMS Synthi functionality inspired looping envelope generators with simultaneous unipolar (0V-10V) and bipolar (-5V-+5V), VCA, Noise generator and Sample & Hold.
  • Fusion VCA/Waveshaper/Ringmodulator – a modulation source based on two miniature pentodes that operates as VCA, waveshaper and ringmodulator. With two CVs applied simultaneously to different stages of the VCA, audio rate modulations, using ringmodulator as a waveshaper it becomes surprisingly versatile sound shaping module.
  • 84HP One Row Skiff case
  • 20 patch cables

Pricing and Availability:

Das Klein Fusion is available now for € 1600.00.

Erica Synths Open Sources Its DIY Eurorack Module Designs

Erica Synths has announced that it is discontinuing its legacy DIY eurorack projects, and making them open source so that they can still be available to synthesists that want to DIY their modules.

The collection of projects includes an all-in-one acid bassline synth voice, BBD delay, MIDI-to-CV module and enough designs that once could build up a complete system.

Erica Synths plans to introduce a new collection of educational DIY kits for simple and affordable Eurorack modules, in collaboration with Riga Technical University. They plan to announced the new line in Autumn 2020.

The open source projects include:

  • Bassline – all in one synth voice for acid basslines and drones
  • BBD delay/flanger – all analogue effects unit based on V3205 BBD IC Delay – tape and digital delay unit with tap tempo, tempo sync, reverse, hold and add functions
  • Dual VCA – Polivoks architecture inspired dual VCA, rare Russian differential op-amps are now replaced with AS3330
  • Envelope – recreation of Polivoks envelope generator with loop and end of attack functions
  • MIDI-CV – Polivoks functionality inspired dual MIDI-CV converter with glide function
  • Mixer – simple 3 chanel audio mixer
  • Modulator – Polivoks functionality inspired LFO, noise and S&H module
  • Output – Output module with headphone amplifier
  • Polivoks VCF – authentic recreation of the Polivoks VCF
  • Swamp – their take on the Wogglebug module
  • VCO3 – Polivoks inspired VCO with nice extra – VCO Sync input

The projects are available on Github. Each project folder contains complete information and files to build a module: schematics, Gerber files for a front panel, Gerber files for PCBs, BOMs, component placement with values and designators and assembly manuals.

By making these projects open source, Erica Synths accepts third party use for personal, educational or commercial purposes. Since they are available as free and open source projects, Erica Synths will not provide technical support.

Erica Synths Fusion VCA / Waveshaper / Ringmodulator Now Available

Erica Synths has announced that its Fusion VCA / Waveshaper / Ringmodulator is now available.

The new Fusion VCA / Waveshaper / Ringmodulator is a complex sound processor that combines VCA, waveshaper and ringmodulator functions. They say that most of the power of the module lies in its ability to perform advanced modulations.

Features:

  • Full analog design
  • Vacuum tube based VCA – two miniature pentodes for better gain reduction
  • Two unconventional CV controls – CVs are not mixed, but they control different grid voltages of the tubes
  • Manual VCA bias control
  • Manual overdrive
  • Input crossfader
  • Built-in ringmodulator
  • Direct switch for conventional VCA mode
  • Low power consumption due to miniature vacuum tubes

Erica Synths SYNTRX Hands-On Demo

[embedded content]

Synthesist Hainbach shared this video, which offers his take on the new Erica Synth SYNTRX synthesizer.

“After two months spend with the SYNTRX and recording an album with it,” he notes, “I feel comfortable to make a more detailed video. I give some ideas how it can be more than a synth in the studio, show the raw sound of its individual parts and give my general impression on it.”

The SYNTRX is an interesting example a synth that’s clearly inspired by a vintage design, but which goes far beyond the original. The SYNTRX takes inspiration from the EMS Synthi AKS, featuring a similar form factor and build.

But the SYNTRX is an all-new synth design, taking the original concept to a new level. A key change is that the pin patch matrix of the original, which was loved and loathed in equal measure, has been replaced with a digitally-controlled analog patch matrix. This makes it possible for the synth to save up 256 patches.

Other features features not found on the Synthi AKS are Sample & Hold circuit with individual clock, octave switch for VCO1, synchronization of VCO2, AD mode on the envelope generator, as well as MIDI that accepts CV, Gate, Modulation wheel messages and program change messages for the matrix control.

The SYNTRX also is a key instrument on Hainbach’s new album, Assertion, which he says grew out of his response to the Coronavirus pandemic:

“My new album Assertion is my way out of the gloom of this situation, that sees a world becoming in many ways smaller and more closed-minded, while our most vulnerable waste away. It is an attempt at hope, a conscious choice of traveling joyously in music, while the body stays in isolation. It is a celebration of collaboration, as musicians Maysun and Andrew Raffo Dewar contribute to the sound of this album and Nani Gutierrez spins her fantastic visual world further, in the seventh year of our work together.

It is an album I hope you can put on anytime you need something to underscore your happiness or take you out of the ever threatening darkness.”

Hainbach’s kit for Assertion features the Syntrx, Chase Bliss Blooper, Bechstein Model 10 piano, Brüel & Kjaer 2204 Sound Level Meter with 1613 filter and Roland Juno 60. He discusses the making of the album in the video below:
