New Platform, ‘Simple’, Lets You Design The Perfect Synth

At Superbooth 2022, Synthux Academy has launched Simple, a new platform that promises to make creating your own ‘perfect’ custom synthesizer easy.

Simple is a platform for synth design. The sole purpose of it is to help musicians and makers design and build professional instruments.

The platform is built out of three parts – a community, educational resources and DIY kits.

What is the Simple Kit?

The Simple Kit is a synth DIY kit that is designed to make it easy and fun to build electronic instruments, synths, effects, drum machines etc.

Simple is a community project. All the revenues from Simple are invested back in community activities: the podcast, workshops, the Simple platform and other educational content.

Profree-4 Open Source Hardware Synthesizer Now Available On Kickstarter

Japanese development team PikoPiko Factory has launched a Kickstarter project to support development of the Profree-4 open source synthesizer.

Profree-4 is an original synth design, based on the voice circuitry of the Sequential Prophet-5. Unlike the original, it’s a mini-synth, features MIDI support, can run on batteries, can be used as a keytar and has a built-in speaker for mobile use.

After development, all technical information of Profree-4 will be provided under the “Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0.International” license. This means that anyone can build, make and sell the Profree-4.

Erica Synths Intros EDU DIY Sequencer

Erica Synths has introduced the EDU DIY Sequencer, a simple five-step sequencer for Eurorack modular systems that’s available as a DIY project.

Features include adjustable sequence length, per step gate status, and output range. It works both from an internal and external clock and has reset input for more complex sequences, if several sequencers are chained up. It works also as a waveshaper when clocked at the audio rate.

EDU with one specific goal in mind: to teach people with little-to-no prior experience how to design analog synthesizer circuits from scratch. What you’ll find in the box is not simply meant to be soldered together and then disappear in your rack. Instead, we want to take you through the circuit design process step by step, explaining every choice we’ve made and how it impacts the finished module.

Free App, MiniDexed, Puts 8 DX7s On A $35 Raspberry Pi

Synthesist Floyd Steinberg shared this in-depth look at MiniDexed, an open-source synth DIY project that lets you run 8 instances of DEXED, a free Yamaha DX7 emulator, on a Raspberry Pi.

The Raspberry Pi is an inexpensive single-board computer platform, created to make computing affordable to almost anyone. The Raspberry Pi 4, like the one used for this project, is available for around $35 USD.

MiniDexed is a FM synthesizer, modeled on the Yamaha DX7, that runs on a bare metal Raspberry Pi (without a Linux kernel or operating system). On Pi Raspberry 2 and larger, it can run 8 tone generators, basically creating an open source equivalent of the TX816/TX802 (8 DX7 instances, without the keyboard, in one box).

Multi MIDI Controller, Filter, Router & Sound Generator

Pangrus shared this video demo of the Multi, a multi-function MIDI device that can be used as a MIDI controller, sound generator, sequencer and more.

The Pangrus Multi is available as a kit or fully assembled. It allows any kind of MIDI filtering and routing operation and it also functions as a bi-directional USB to DIN converter.

It’s based on the Seeeduino XIAO, so you can program Multi as a simple sequencer, algorithmic arpeggiator, aleatoric patch generator and more.

The Multi is based on open source software, and several options are already available:

  • drone – a six oscillators drone machine.
  • synth_sequencer – a three oscillatorsmonophonic synth with embedded sequencer. It receives MIDI clock and note messages.
  • bytebeat player – play salgorithmic music, with no instruments and no real oscillators, but a math expression that creates an audio output waveform as a function of time, processed 8000 times per second. The expression has six parameters accessible through the multi knobs.
  • midi converter – a USB to 5 DIN bi-directional MIDI converter.
  • midi metronome – takes the MIDI clock from the 5 DIN midi connector and generates a metronome click on the audio output, to allow acoustic musicians to synchronize their performance to an electronic setup.

Recreating The Rare Kawai School Rhythmer, A Tangible Programmable Drum Machine From The ’60s

This video, via wildchurch, demonstrates a DIY recreation of the very rare Kawai School Rhythmer, an educational rhythm machine from the 1960s.

The Kawai School Rhythmer lets you create custom rhythms using pegs inserted into a matrix, representing the steps of a beat. It features five percussion sounds, Triangle, Japanese Woodblock, Cymbal, Small Taiko & Big Taiko.

This DIY version is based on the circuitry of a 1970s DIY drum machine kit produced by the Japanese company, Elekit. The remaining circuitry is built around 4017 chips and a 555 timer for the internal clock.

The peg matrix involves microswitches, such that, when a peg is inserted, the signal passes through, triggering a drum sound on that particular step. While this DIY version has a retro futuristic vibe, the original, below, was more minimalistic.

Erica Synths Intros DIY Envelope Generator Kit

Erica Synths today introduced another module in its educational DIY line, mki x es.EDU, created in cooperation with Moritz Klein.

The latest module is a versatile envelope generator, which join the recently announced VCO and VCF modules. The EDU DIY EG is described as ‘a slightly optimized ADSR envelope generator’, since it has only three controls. With sustain on, it outputs an ASR (attack/sustain/release) envelope, but when the sustain is set to a minimum, it becomes an AD (attack/decay) envelope generator, that ignores gate length.

Release and decay are controlled by the same knob, while a looping function and an inverted output make the module versatile for complex patches.

The mki x es.EDU project will consist of 9 kits, in addition to the DIY enclosure and PSU. This includes a sequencer, a VCO, a wavefolder, a noise/S&H module, a mixer, a VCF, an envelope generator, a dual VCA and an output stereo mixer with a headphone amplifier.

Note: The full EDU DIY system is designed to have 2 EG modules, so order 2 EG kits, if you’re wanting to build the entire system.

Gorgeous Custom Nintendo Inspired Synthesizer, The NES-SY37

Designer and craftsman Love Hultén shared this video demo of his latest creation, the NES-SY37, a custom synthesizer design, inspired by the classic Nintendo Entertainment System.

The NES-SY37 takes characteristic elements from the NES console and combines them with a Commodore SX-64 portable. Inside, you’ll find a polyphonic NES Poly Chiptune Synthesizer (Arcano), accompanied by a spring reverb and the hapiNES L (Twisted Electronics), a 4 voice multi-track chiptune synth inspired by the RP2A07 sound chip from the original Nintendo console.

The keyboard uses a NES 7pin port for connection and controls the polyphonic synth, but it also triggers a custom real-time MIDI visualizer, made in collaboration with artist p1xelfool. The 800×600 LCD can also be used for gaming, as the NES-SY37 accepts NES cartridges and a second 7pin port allows for Nintendo controllers.

Gorgeous DIY Synthesizer Build

Audiovisual artists and craftsman Love Hultén shared this demo of his latest DIY synth build, TE-LAB.

The TE-LAB is an electromechanical sound machine, based on modules from Teenage Engineering & the Holograms Microcosm.  It also features a custom-built tangible sequencer, inspired by Lomond Campbell’s turntable.
